1989 and 20 years later
Our
story goes back to 1989. Patrick and Maggie were 5 years old. Their
families attended the same
church. They sang in the same kids choir. They just didn’t know each
other. It was in 2009, where Maggie first saw Patrick on the opposite
side of the sanctuary at church.
We were probably best friends, running around as 5 year olds and never knew it.
Let’s fast forward almost 20 years to 2009 the year they actually met.
Maggie had just graduated from college, and was moving back to Baltimore after a month long trip to India post-graduation from Oral Roberts University. Moving home meant she was now a college grad, needing to find a job in the “real world." She moved in with her parents, and started re-attending her Baltimore church.
Patrick was finishing up his last year in college at UMBC. He was training for Spring Training, hoping to make a farm team in affiliated baseball. He already had a contract for an independent team in Georgia.
One Sunday that Fall, Maggie's mom noticed Patrick sitting on the other side. She asked Maggie,
Maggie, there's a good looking man over there. Do you know him?
Maggie was hooked. That entire service she tried to focus on the sermon but it was so hard. She even thought to herself,
He can’t possibly love Jesus, AND be here by choice and be that good looking. His mom must have drug him here.
Patrick says he remembers seeing Maggie, back in High school, but Maggie doesn't remember seeing him. He always wondered who that "cute girl" was, running up and down the aisle.
For the next few weeks Maggie started looking for him weekly... really trying hard not to be distracted... especially while in church! It was the Sunday after Christmas, when they first met. Patrick’s God-parents knew Maggie's family well and thus introduced us through a series of events. Maggie was so nervous the entire service. She knew she would be meeting him, and after all, she was nervous. He was good looking, he was a snowboarder (my favorite sport) and a baseball player! The men in her family are lacrosse players, so you know what they thought.
Maggie and Patrick met following the service. Patrick intentionally introduced
himself to Maggie last so he would “naturally” continue conversation
with her. Patrick and Maggie discovered that they both had signed up for
a leadership course in the church that would meet for 9 weeks, every
Wednesday, in January and February of 2012. Very soon, these Wednesday
nights, would be the first dates Maggie and
Patrick ever had. The dates entailed leaving church after the class was over, and driving to the
grocery store. For more about their first dates, read Grocery Stores can be
dangerous.
To sum it up, all of 2010 was an interesting year. They talked, then didn’t talk, then they talked to other people, then talked to each other again. It wasn’t until October that they started talking again for real.
November 1 is their official dating anniversary. That’s the day they decided to really try this dating thing. Now 3 years later... they are getting married... on November 2nd!
The night before their wedding they will celebrate 3 years of dating. The following day is their wedding day, November 2nd, when they will commit to each other for life.
